Review

Patrick O'Donnell has taken his many years of experience in one of our nation's largest police departments and turned it into a superb resource for authors writing crime fiction.O'Donnell does a great job of explaining the route most police officers take through initial training to working on the street. He basically begins the journey of the young police officer at the decision-making level in an early chapter that explores why people become police officers. He gives great examples that support in-depth insight into an officer's early career.A lot of what O'Donnell writes about is personal experience, and it should be noted that in other departments and other states some of the processes and laws he describes are slightly different. But most of the information in the book is universal and can be a great benefit to any author who is writing crime fiction with police characters.Another truly valuable insight within this book is simply the language O'Donnell employs in the writing of it. When you read O'Donnell "Cops and Writers" book, you're reading the words of a cop written in the language he uses. Every career field has its own jargon, and while "Cops and Writers" is easily accessible even to people who aren't familiar with "cop jargon," O'Donnell peppers this book with the jargon you would hear if you could be a fly-on-the-wall in a police station.I thoroughly enjoyed the first-hand accounts and found the information in this book useful.I especially appreciate that this book provides the perspective of the uniformed patrol officer. All the movies and TV shows and crime dramas seem to focus on the glamour of detectives, but the vast majority of police work is done by the "boys and girls in blue" and it's interesting and useful to have that perspective.I'm looking forward to more of O'Donnell's writing aids books.
