Desciption

The second novel of the Forerunner Saga trilogy by science-fiction legend Greg Bear - set in the Halo universe and based on the New York Times best-selling video game series! One hundred thousand years ago. In the wake of the apparent self-destruction of the alien Forerunner empire, two humans - Chakas and Riser - are like flotsam washed up on very strange shores indeed. Captured by the Forerunner known as the Master Builder and then misplaced during a furious battle in space, Chakas and Riser now find themselves on an inverted world where horizons rise into the sky and humans of all kinds are trapped in a perilous cycle of horror and neglect. They have become both research animals and strategic pawns in a cosmic game whose madness knows no end - a game of ancient vengeance between the powers who seeded the galaxy with life and the Forerunners who expect to inherit their sacred Mantle of Responsibility to all living things. In the company of a young girl and an old man, Chakas begins an epic journey across a lost and damaged Halo ringworld in search of a way home, an explanation for the warrior spirits rising up within, and the reason for the Forerunner Librarian’s tampering with human destiny. Their travels will take them into the domain of a powerful and monstrous intelligence - known as “the Captive” by Forerunners and “the Primordial” by ancient human warriors, this being may not only control the fate of Chakas, Riser, and the rest of humanity, but of all sentient life across the galaxy.... Review

If you are like me, you were probably lured into reading or may be considering, reading this series of books by Greg Bear simply because of a pre established Halo love for the fiction. These books through Gregs expertise manage to thrill you even though the protagonist never fires a weapon! Which is quite astounding. My main praise for this book, Primordium, is that it is paced better than that of the first. Others may say otherwise especially in regard to all the walking the protagonist endures, but this is no nuisance considering this halo is far larger than any other. Greg describes every voyage beautifully and appreciates the scale and grandeur of Halo so dont be mislead by those who say the walking is overkill. These are simply impatient unappreciative readers who are struggling to adjust to this new theme of Halo. Without the bullets, neck snapping, and heroic prescence of a Spartan . I know, I was one of them. Like I said before the pacing is improved. In Cryptum the climax built and peaked much towards the end leaving me yearning for more. With Primordium the climax immediately begins to form just about half way through the book. Much sooner than Cryptum, thus giving the reader a more prolonged thrill. The climax builds incredibly towards the end, leaving a truly ASTOUNDING cliffhanger. At least I regard it as such. It truly will amaze any halo fan and I urge any TRUE fan to read this book because it obviously relates to Halo 4. Look, the difference between these novels (forerunner saga) and others (Nylund, Traviss, etc) is this: They propel the fiction. All the other great novels filled in halo universe Gaps or delved deeper into the fiction elaborating certain aspects. This novel does something new by moving the fiction further ahead. Something only done by the actual Video Games. Halo Glasslands is another Gap filler between Halo 3 and Halo 4. Because of the new revelations and secrets you owe it to yourself to buy this book. Its a great read with new lands, new enemies, horror, love, betrayal, despair, giant scorpions, giant sea creatures, disgusting flood, (i will only spoil that much, but thats no real surprise, afterall this is Halo) death, humor, hope, the precursor, and a fuzzy gentle giant which I will let you discover on your own. I just read the book and the ending still has me reeling. I thought this book would satiate me until Halo 4.....i was wrong.
