Desciption

For 31 years, a monster terrorized the residents of Wichita, Kansas. A bloodthirsty serial killer, self-named "BTK" - for "bind them, torture them, kill them" - he slaughtered men, women, and children alike, eluding the police for decades while bragging of his grisly exploits to the media. The nation was shocked when the fiend who was finally apprehended turned out to be Dennis Rader - a friendly neighbor...a devoted husband...a helpful Boy Scout dad...the respected president of his church.Written by four award-winning crime reporters who covered the story for more than 20 years, Bind, Torture, Kill is the most intimate and complete account of the BTK nightmare told by the people who were there from the beginning. With newly released documents, evidence, and information - and with the full cooperation, for the very first time, of the Wichita Police Department's BTK Task Force - the authors have put all the pieces of the grisly puzzle into place, thanks to their unparalleled access to the families of the killer and his victims.Contains mature themes. Review

I moved to Missouri about the same time that BKT resurfaced and was captured in my neighboring state of Kansas. I quickly realized that I had missed something of deep cultural importance to this area. Neighbors and the news talked about BTK almost in shorthand, assuming that everyone knew the history and details of the story. Obviously, I didn't. I picked some of it up, but simply didn't have the time to really learn much about it. I finally got around to filling in my knowledge through reading this book.It is EXCELLENT!!! It takes the reader from BTK's initial preparations for beginning his murder spree through his incarceration for 10 consecutive life sentences. The book is well-written and the Kindle edition is absolutely perfect as far as I could tell. The images were sharp and the text didn't have any formatting problems. The book is set up as a parallel narrative tracing the life and crimes of BTK and the efforts of law enforcement to catch him. The detail in the book is incredible. This is in part because of the extensive notes that both BTK and the police kept, but it also reflects the care of the authors to write a definitive history on the subject. Despite the detail, the story moved at a pleasant pace. It never became bogged down with excessive discussions of trivial issues. It also never left me confused or feeling that I was only getting part of the story.Through I learned appreciate how evil BTK is, I found I was more fascinated with the law enforcement's stubborn determination that led to his capture. The book includes details that help provide a complete narrative but it is not excessively gruesome. Adequate detail is given of each murder to understand what happened, but without being sensational and off-putting. Perhaps most impressive, the book allowed me to form a meaningful connection with the characters. The officers and BTK are presented as real humans, each with his (or her, although nearly all of the individuals discussed were male) own foibles and strengths. The book presented the real human toll of BTK, not just in the lives he took but also in terms of the impacts on loved ones and the heavy weight carried by the officers' and their families. Perhaps the feature I like the most about the book is the evenhanded discussion of the relationship between the BTK task force and the press. Given that this book is written by journalists who were actively involved in reporting the BTK investigation, the temptation must have been very high to "shade the narrative" to portray themselves and their colleagues favorably or to get back at others for perceived slights. I detected NONE of that. Instead, the cops' very real frustration with the media is discussed in a very evenhanded manner, even when it is critical of the authors and their organizations. As interesting as BTK is, the officers responsible for his capture are the true stars of this book. I picked up the book expecting it to be a relatively two-dimensional narrative of the life and times of BTK, but I quickly appreciated learning so much about the officers. I hadn't planned on that, or on enjoying the book so much. Simply put, this is an exceptional book and well worth your time and money.
