Master effective color combinations with Rachel Hauser’s The Quilter’s Field Guide to Color. Cut up the included color card, start one of the 14 exercises, and let’s play! The Quilter’s Field Guide to Color teaches readers just how to create color combinations. Each of the exercises is a new approach to color theory, challenging quilters to use their color cards (included) to explore a variety of possible combinations. Using the colors selected during each of Rachel Hauser’s inspirational themes, such as Seasons and How to Determine Your Style, quilters sew up a Bear Paw block or two as they progress through the workbook. This collection of blocks can all be combined to create any of the three quilt patterns provided. Forget the dry color theory! This book is fun, conversational, practical, and beautifully inspiring.Includes color photographs Read more

Review

I have been waiting for this book to come out after reading about it on Rachel Hauser's blog. The wait was worth it as this book is a feast for the eyes and the mind. The author's writing style is warm and inviting and the concepts and exercises that she presents are easy to understand. The chapters are well laid out and the example photos are numerous and beautiful. Here are some topics that are covered in the book:Understanding Color (using temperature, seasonal inspiration, emotion);Color Theory (color wheel, using rainbow blends, including all colors, working with value, creating fabric palettes); Exploring Neutrals;Finding your Way (telling a story, looking for inspiration);Working in Cloth (how to build a stash, determining style and choosing fabrics).Over the past 20 years I've owned several books on color theory for quilters and none of them have provided the information that is contained in this book. I'm transitioning from traditional quilts to modern quilts/fabric and I feel this book will help me successfully make the move.My only criticism is related to the color swatches in the Color Swatch Library. The reader is supposed to cut them apart in order to use them in the exercises. The color swatches are printed on quality card stock however there is no perforation between each color. I'm afraid to cut them because my cuts might be wonky. Hopefully my Fiskars paper cutter will do a better job than I can do with scissors.
