Review

People love to trash this when I’m sure they haven’t actually read it. It’s a guide book, not a gospel. You are free to take or leave anything in there. The guide is updated regularly, however I used the same book for four trips and had no trouble. Descriptions of places are accurate, advice is sound. If you’re put off by small tame paragraphs regarding the spiritual, in reference to a religious pilgrimage, it might be a sign that you need a religious pilgrimage. Just skip over those parts and quit criticizing the author for being who he is instead of who you’d like him to be. The author has put in years of research and walking, you could always write your own. Obviously not everyone is doing this for spiritual reasons but if you’re that sensitive and don’t want to leave your comfort zone maybe just stay home. The maps could be a bit better, I take off half a star for that. If you “must have” an app, then get one, however, imho you will be missing out on the daily joy, the spontaneity, the mystery, the discovery. Leave major electronics at home. Don’t book a tour service, all you need to do is show up and follow the yellow arrows. If your pack weighs 20#, go back through it and remove 5# of stuff.
